A German doctor (Alex Brendemühl) meets an Argentinean family and follows them to the small town where they plan to open a small rooming house. Eva (Natalia Oreiro), Enzo (Diego Peretti) and their three children welcome the doctor into their home, unaware that they are harboring Josef Mengele, one of WWII's most heinous Nazi war criminals, who was infamous for performing human experiments in the Auschwitz concentration camp. With the best of intentions, Eva entrusts her premature daughter to the doctor’s care. But as he begins treating the underdeveloped child with growth hormones, it reawakens Mengele’s fascination with genetic research and creating a master race.
Director Lucía Puenzo's (THE FISH CHILD, XXY) also wrote the novel upon which the film is based, examining a little-known chapter of Argentinean history during which “the Angel of Death " Mengele and many other Nazi war criminals hid in South America following their escape from Germany. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the Argentine entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards earlier this year.
