Marital squabbles, a divorced dad trying to connect with the kids he sporadically sees, teenagers acting out, parents learning to let go… Though Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD may not tell the story of a spectacular life, the way in which he tells the story has been called "A masterpiece of American moviemaking and a memorable 12-year epic of family life that isn't quite like anything else in the history of cinema" by Salon’s Andrew O'Hehir.
Writer/director Linklater (SCHOOL OF ROCK, FAST FOOD NATION) filmed BOYHOOD in 39 days between 2002 and 2013 with the same cast, allowing Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane) to literally grow up on screen before our eyes as he witnesses this uneventfully normal - and highly relatable - family story.
Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's "Yellow" to Arcade Fire's "Deep Blue."
Starring Ethan Hawke (REALITY BITES, BEFORE MIDNIGHT) and Patricia Arquette (TRUE ROMANCE, television’s Medium) as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater (director Richard’s daughter) as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before.
