10 Things I Hate About You
In the grand and storied tradition of presenting adapted plots from Shakespeare in the medium of high school relationship drama, REWIND presents one of the exemplars of the form — 10 Things I Hate About You.
Based on The Taming of the Shrew — a play that really lets you know right from the jump how it’s going to be — 10 Things starts with some disadvantages The source material is problematically misogynist and sets up a cringey story, even when compared to other light comedies of the era. But it manages to succeed anyway, through the strength of its performances (Julia Stiles is whip-smart and self-possessed on the screen; Heath Ledger disappears entirely into a character that barely deserves his talent; Alison Janney is never not spectacular) and through its frankly adorable status as a time capsule of the late ‘90s. Nostalgia is okay sometimes. Come immerse yourself with REWIND.
