Turn It Around: the Story of East Bay Punk

There have been more documentaries made about punk rock than there were people in the audience seeing The Dictators at CBGB in 1975. Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk carves out its own slice by zeroing in on a particular time and place: the NorCal scene in the late ‘70s, and the evolution of a new species of punk.

As the once-vibrant California scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded with a fun and inclusive style of punk that also spread the radical ideas Berkeley was known for. Banding together around the all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club and zines like Maximumrocknroll, this collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators’ petri dish for art and music that changed the world forever. Even casual fans know about some of the bands who emerged from the Berkeley scene that sprung. But their success and fame is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots here go deep into the underground. Executive produced by Green Day and with narration by Iggy Pop, the movie is a nearly-three-hour-long love letter to bands great and small, with footage from and interviews with members of Operation Ivy and Rancid, Bad Religion, NOFX, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, the Angry Samoans, Bikini Kill, and dozens more.
