A Ghost Story
Casey Affleck (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Manchester by the Sea) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol) play a married couple identified only by initials in this solemn, literally haunting story of the histories that binds us to each other and the voids left by absence. C and M are arguing over whether or not to move out of their modest house in the suburbs: C, the husband, wants to stay while M, the wife, yearns to relocate to some place more modern and less lonely. That argument is ended in the worst of all ways when C is killed in a car accident. But under his sheet, reappearing in the house he used to share, the ghost of C still isn’t ready to leave. And things look different from the other side.
It’s standard ghost mythology in the West that spirits often stay around in the world of the living when they have unresolved business on Earth. That’s a sensible enough idea; all of us have unfinished business all over the place. Human relationships rarely end cleanly, or completely, and we all leave pieces of ourselves wherever we live, whomever we touch. A Ghost Story examines relationships and their dissolution through the lens of haunting. Also starring musican Will Oldham, time itself is a character in this languid, unsettling movie about the act and metaphor of letting go.
