Like Water For Chocolate with Laura Esquivel

Like Water for Chocolate is the poetic and powerful story of a girl named Tita, born into a family of women with strong traditions and equally strong desires. But it’s just as much the story of Mexico in a time of revolt and revolution, and the fantastical plot and semi-mystical characters serve both stories at once. Tita is in love with a man whom she is forbidden to marry; the youngest of her sisters, it’s her duty to stay home and care for her mother. Promised instead to her older sister, her paramour, Pedro, promises that he only agreed to the match so that he can stay close to Tita, whom he truly loves. Inflamed with emotion, the meals that Tita prepares for her family are suffused with a magical power that changes all who eat them, and she can only hope that someday that magic will find a way to break down the restraints that hold her back from her destiny.

Erotically charged and complex, Like Water for Chocolate gave American audiences a wholly new respect for Spanish-language cinema upon its release in 1992, and its force on the screen has never been equaled. The book on which it is based was a phenomenal bestseller in multiple languages. Author Laura Esquivel has since become a matriarch of the Mexican cultural and literary scene, and a political advocate and elected federal representative in Mexico City.

For this very special presentation of Like Water for Chocolate, Tampa Theatre is proud to welcome author and screenwriter Laura Esquivel, who will join us LIVE on the Tampa Theatre stage to welcome the audience and host an exclusive post-film Q&A!

When it was published in 1989, her first novel, Like Water for Chocolate, became a global sensation, transforming Laura Esquivel into a household name and major force in contemporary Mexican and Latin American literature. The novel spent more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list, sold more than 3 million copies in the U.S., and has been published in 36 languages. The film is based on Esquivel's screenplay adaptation of the novel. Like Water for Chocolate is now headed to the small screen, with the novel being adapted into an English-language television series. Laura Esquivel has published nine additional works, including Tita's Diary (2017), which is a sequel to Like Water for Chocolate, and she is working on Mi Negro Pasado, the third part of the Like Water for Chocolate trilogy.

Tickets are $12.50 / $9.50 for Tampa Theatre Members (plus service fees), and those who purchase their tickets online will have the option to add on a signed copy of Like Water For Chocolate for $17.05.
