Casino Royale (2006)

After receiving a license to kill, British Secret Service agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) heads to Madagascar, where he uncovers a link to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), a mysterious financier who’s the money behind a variety of terrorist organizations. Learning that Le Chiffre plans to raise money in a high-stakes poker game, MI6 sends Bond to play against him, gambling that their newest "00" operative will bankrupt him and topple his organization. But Bond unexpectedly falls for Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a treasury employee who’s providing his stake at the table. Will that connection jeopardize his first real mission?

In 2006, James Bond’s career in film was almost 50 years old, and the movies had just gone through a kind of mid-life crisis of their own. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan had some memorable moments as 007, but times and audiences had changed. Out of that environment comes Daniel Craig as a Bond unlike any of his forbears. Less quippy, less debonair, nothing of the gentleman spy; Craig’s Bond is brutal, damaged, a weapon just barely wielded by his superiors. Casino Royale, the third Bond film to take on author Ian Fleming’s original James Bond novel but the first in what’s considered “real” James Bond movie continuity, completely reimagined what the character would be in the 21st century.
